Yesterday was Pride in London. It also marked 50 years since homosexuality was legalised in the UK. It felt like the whole of central London had been shut down and filled with rainbows. The atmosphere was that of a carnival which was great to photograph as people really let their guard down. I’m very proud of London’s pride celebrations as celebrating diversity is an important cornerstone of an inclusive society.
However although Pride is a really fun event it is it is important not to get so caught up in the celebratory atmosphere that you forget the challenges that the LGBT community continue to face. Especially in the current political climate of a prime minister with a very poor voting record when its comes to LGBT issues and the DUP’s anti-LGBT agenda. To be an affective ally of this community it is important to educate yourself about and continue supporting LGBT issues year round, rather than solely at pride where you benefit from the fun atmosphere and enjoy the rainbow aesthetic.
